Turbulence

Andes blue onyx

14"x8"x12"

This piece was carved just prior to my daughter's graduation from law school.  She asked me to carve a piece that captured the essence of the law school challenge: so much to learn, voluminous readings with little time for digestion, the pursuit of all legal perspectives, the anticipation of every question all of which is required in advance of the deadline whether it be the beginning of class, filing of the brief, sitting for the bar exam or mock trial.  While she was describing this to me I locked in on the challenge of seeing all sides of an issue.

I likened the pursuit of all legal perspectives to a surfer perfectly positioned inside the curl of a surf.  Unfortunately, for most surfers this lasts but a short moment before they spin out of the curl or become trapped in the turbulence of the crashing wave.  For the surfer (and law students) that moment, while fleeting, evokes an intense feeling of accomplishment.
